The Carrollton community is mourning the sudden death of Michael Todd Walker, 57, who was killed Sunday afternoon in a single-vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 77 in Wood County, West Virginia.
What began as an ordinary Sunday ended in tragedy for Michael’s family and friends, who are now facing the painful reality of an unexpected loss.
According to the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 1:11 p.m. on I-77 northbound near mile marker 180, just beyond the Emerson Avenue exit.
Michael was pronounced dead at the scene.
Vehicle Leaves Roadway and Rolls Over
Investigators said the vehicle involved was a 2025 Chevrolet Equinox.
For reasons that remain under investigation, the vehicle left the left side of the northbound roadway and entered the median before rolling over and coming to rest.
Michael was inside the vehicle when the crash occurred.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene, but Michael could not be saved.
Authorities have not yet determined why the vehicle left the roadway. Investigators are continuing to examine the crash, and officials have not released additional conclusions regarding what may have caused it.
Wendy Sue Walker Injured
Also involved in the crash was Wendy Sue Walker, 56, of Carrollton, Ohio.
Wendy was transported to Camden Clark Medical Center for treatment. Her injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
While Wendy survived the crash, Michael’s death has left his family and those who knew him grieving.
The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.
Emergency Crews Respond
The serious crash brought multiple emergency agencies to the interstate.
Responding agencies included the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, Camden Clark Ambulance Service, Waverly VFD, Williamstown VFD, Eastwood VFD, West Virginia Division of Highways, Wood County Coroner’s Office and Pifer’s Towing.
The northbound lanes near mile marker 179 were temporarily closed while emergency crews worked at the scene and investigators examined the wreckage.
The roadway was later reopened to traffic.
