Retired New York City Police Department Chief Anthony “Tough Tony” Izzo has died after being found unresponsive in a backyard swimming pool at his home in Stony Brook, Long Island, on Friday evening. He was 75.
According to Suffolk County Police, a family member called 911 at approximately 7:45 p.m. after discovering Izzo unresponsive in the pool at his home near Malverne Lane. Officers and members of the Stony Brook Fire Department responded to the residence and removed Izzo from the water.
Emergency responders performed CPR before Izzo was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Suffolk County Police said there is no indication of criminality in connection with Izzo’s death. The circumstances surrounding the drowning remain under investigation, but authorities have not suggested that foul play was involved.
Izzo had a long and distinguished career with the NYPD. The department said he served as chief of its Organized Crime Control Bureau, one of the senior leadership positions within the department.
He also served as the commanding officer of the 115th Precinct in 1995, where he was remembered for his leadership and dedication to the communities he served.
News of Izzo’s death has prompted tributes from members of the NYPD and the wider law enforcement community. Colleagues remembered a veteran officer whose career was defined by public service and leadership.
His death marks the loss of a longtime member of the New York law enforcement community. For his family, former colleagues and friends, Izzo will be remembered not only for the senior positions he held but also for the years he devoted to serving New York City.
